During Shark Season, Sharks Will Have to Look Out for YOU!

In Galveston, the shark doesn’t chase you—you chase the shark

What many people don’t know about Galveston is it’s actually a hub for shark fishing! We get all kinds of sharks around here during the warmer months, including blacktips, tiger sharks, bulls, and more.

But what do you need in order to catch sharks? Can anyone do it? And are you going to need a bigger boat (Jaws reference!)?

What You Need to Know About Shark Fishing

There are some key things you’ll want to know about shark fishing in Galveston, Texas…

  • Go during the warmer months. Shark fishing is best during later spring and summer. This generally means about May-September. This is the perfect time of the year not only for fishing but also just enjoying some time out on the water!
  • You Can take your kids.  While you don’t want young ones reeling in the sharks, they are welcome on most charters. Kids love seeing sharks in real life! Take proper precautions and don’t allow your child to get too close. Even out of the water, sharks can be dangerous.
  • You should hire a charter. Catching sharks can be tough and even dangerous. You will want to hire a good charter company with a captain and crew that can help you to properly fish for sharks in a safe way.
  • Sharks are fighters! This should really come as no surprise, but sharks are fierce fighters. Shark fishing is extremely exciting.

Make It a Vacation!

Galveston in the summer is absolutely beautiful! You’ll definitely want to make the experience of shark fishing a full vacation.

When you aren’t fishing, check out Moody Garden. They have a zoo, museum, aquarium, and more. You can also kick back and relax on Galveston beach. Bring some sunblock and water, though. It gets hot!

With Galveston being right on the water and being such a big fishing hub, you can expect some amazing seafood! Make sure you visit one of our top seafood restaurants in the area. These include restaurants like the Black Pearl Oyster Bar, Vargas Cut and Catch, and Miller’s Seawall Grill.
