It’s Redfish Season! What You Need to Know About Catching Redfish

It’s Redfish Season again!

I love this time of year, and I have since I was a kid. As an adult, I enjoy providing my kids with the same experiences I had when I was younger. Fishing is a great way for the whole family to bond, have fun, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

One of my all-time favorite types of fish to catch is redfish. Red drum fish (also known as “redfish”) is a sportfishing staple—especially in Galveston Bay. Fall is the season for redfish fishing and, since fall is winding down, you’ll want to jump on the opportunity to get out on the water and catch a beautiful show-stopper!

Tips for Catching Redfish

Catching Redfish is a ton of fun! With that said, you may not be sure how to catch them. Whether you are a seasoned fisherman that isn’t used to fishing for red drum fish or you are new to fishing, there are a few things you can do to increase your chances of bringing home an impressive fish!

Here are some tips for catching redfish…

Take Time to Locate Them

Locating redfish is, of course, the first step to catching them! You can look for redfish in shallow waters (often around 1-4 feet deep). You’ll also find that during the fall months, redfish will school up to stay protected. This makes finding and catching them that much easier!

Pick the Right Bait

One thing that people that love to catch red drum fish know is that they love shrimp! You can also use crab. Just make sure you remove the claws and the hard shell. Another option is soft plastic jerk bait like the MirrOLure Lil John MRLJ Twitchbait. These scented baits create a realistic smell redfish love.

Use the Right Lures

There are quite a few choices for lures when it comes to catching redfish. A few popular lures for catching redfish are twitchbait, topwater, and jerkbait lures.

Some popular brands for catching redfish include:

  • Berkley Gulp! Saltwater
  • Strike King Redfish Magic
  • Heddon Super Spook Topwater Fishing Lure
  • Gulp! Saltwater Jerk Shad

Book a Trip on a Fishing Charter

If you aren’t an expert fisherman and simply want a nice day out on the water catching some amazing fish, a fishing charter is the right choice for you! At Wave Dancer Charters, we offer an all-inclusive experience. We provide you with not only a boat with an excellent captain, but also tackle, rods and reels, baits/lures, ice for the fish, and water for when you get thirsty. Once we get back to the dock, we’ll help to clean the outstanding fish you caught and prep them for your trip home.

Our captains know all the top spots and what to look for when catching redfish. All you have to worry about is showing up on time, and bringing your family, Texas Saltwater Fish License (day pass is okay), and all of your essentials for the day (sunscreen, food, camera, seasickness medication, etc.). If you would like a full list of what you should bring, let us know. If you want to bring beer that’s fine. Just make sure it is of the canned variety.

We look forward to taking you out on the water, where you can catch some big fish and create lifelong memories with your friends and family.
